La spada diventa spadino

Purtroppo i The Sword annunciano la cancellazione dei tour europeo ed americano a causa dell'abbandono del batterista Trivett Wingo. Ecco l'annuncio:

On the heels of the cancellation of their European tour, Austin, Texas luminaries THE SWORD are also regretfully canceling the remainder of their scheduled U.S. dates due to the departure of their drummer, Trivett Wingo. The split is amicable and both Trivett and the rest of the band wish each other the best of the luck with their respective plans. THE SWORD is already working diligently to reschedule its European and U.S. dates.

Commented Trivett: "It is with deep sadness that I am announcing my departure from THE SWORD.

"After nearly seven years and some of the most amazing adventures of a lifetime, I have arrived at a place where I am physically and emotionally unable to continue on as part of THE SWORD. If I could go any further, I would as I love the music and JD, Bryan and Kyle are people that I deeply respect, but I have reached a point where I just can't do this anymore. I would like to thank the wonderful people who made this experience what it has been: the fans, the people that I have worked and all of the bands and musicians that have inspired me over the years. I thank you and apologize for any disappointment that this may cause anyone, not least of which THE SWORD."

The remaining members of THE SWORD have released the following statement regarding Trivett's departure:
"We wish Trivett nothing but the best, and it is with heavy hearts that we bid him farewell. He is a phenomenal musician and has been an integral part of this band's success. He helped to lay the foundation that we will continue to build upon, and we wouldn't be where we are without him. We wish he could continue the adventure with us, but we understand that the life of a touring musician is not for everyone. It's been a hell of a ride, and we're sad to see this part of the journey end. The show must go on, though, and will be back on the road as soon as humanly possible."

Che peccato! L'ultimo Warp Riders è un album davvero notevole, e sono convinto che anche dal vivo questi ragazzi ci sappiano fare. In ogni caso la buona notizia è che hanno tutta l'intenzione di continuare e che sono già alla ricerca di un nuovo batterista per recuperare entrambi i tour. Non ci vorrà molto per trovare un drummer con le palle che voglia impegnarsi in una band di ottime prospettive come questa, sono sicuro che sentiremo presto novità a riguardo.

Dopo una lunga pausa meditativa, mi sono dato all'ascolto di qualche nuovo disco targato 2010.

The Sword

Si comincia con Warp Riders dei The Sword, e si fa subito sul serio! Bel disco, solido, ben prodotto, ben suonato, e con alcuni brani davvero degni di nota. Rispetto al passato la band ha intrapreso la via del cambiamento, abbandonando la vena più doom a favore di influenze seventies e metal vecchio stampo. Ci sono dei gran riffoni, che sparati a tutto volume fanno davvero godere, ma se proprio bisogna trovare un difetto, alcuni vanno avanti troppo a lungo. Consigliatissimo!

Quest For Fire

Il secondo disco è Lights From Paradise dei Quest For Fire. Dopo aver letto grandi cose sul loro primo disco, ho voluto toccare con mano il nuovo lavoro della band. Che dire...album davvero bellissimo! Tanta psichedelia, stoner quando serve, e valanghe di grunge! Si, perchè questo disco suona molto "anni 90", facendo tornare alla mente i tempi che furono. La voce non è la colonna portante della band, ma le melodie sono spesso talmente azzeccate ed efficaci che si stampano in testa sin da subito. Credo che Lights From Paradise finirà nella top 10 di quest' anno.

The King Of Frog Island

Arriviamo alla nota dolente...sto parlando dei The King Of Frog Island, con il loro III. Questo è un disco decisamente trascurabile. Ci sono alcuni buoni spunti, e qualche buona idea la si può trovare, ma qui mancano proprio i pezzi, non ci sono ne ispirazione ne creatività. E' un album di riempitivi, nulla di più.

Black Mountain

Chiudo parlando dei Black Mountain con il nuovo Wilderness Heart. L'approccio rispetto ad un discone come In The Future è più soft, c'è più folk, più melodia. Le soluzioni paiono meno complesse, e tutto sembra scorrere liscio e tranquillo. A volte un po' troppo tranquillo per dir la verità, visto che forse un paio di pezzi più duri potevano starci. In ogni caso è un lavoro più che positivo, e sono convinto che con gli ascolti crescerà parecchio, nonostante lo scomodo paragone con il suo fratello maggiore In The Future. Stasera me li becco anche live, olè!
